New Jersey Taxpayers Union

The New Jersey Taxpayers Union endorses Steve Lonegan for Governor and his tax cutting plan for New Jersey.  Former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan is the only candidate offering a comprehensive plan for the future of New Jersey which is explained in detail in his book:  Putting Taxpayers First.

The other candidates, Chris Christie and Jon Corzine, have no comprehensive plans and generally offer the same platitudes New Jerseyans have heard from politicians, both Republican and Democrat, for years … which has lead to the worst tax climate of all the 50 states

The Lonegan plan has several point, when combined, decreases the overall tax burden for all New Jersey taxpayers.  The Flat Tax has been endorsed by Ronald Reagan’s chief economic advisor.  The Lonegan Flat Tax is designed to stop high earners from moving to places like PA (3.07% Flat Tax) and Florida (0%) and to have high earners from NYC move to NJ as a tax haven.  The Corporate income tax elimination and the property tax reduction strategy will reduce taxes for all New jersey taxpayers.  The main points of the Lonegan plan are:

1.  Cut spending by $5 billion

2.  Flat income tax of 2.9% decreasing to 2.1% over 3 years

3.  Property Tax Reduction Strategy:

a. Adjust the State aid to schools to provide equal amount on a per-student basis

b. Provide vouchers for “Abbott” school districts that do not meet standards

c. End Binding Arbitration and Forced Labor Agreements

d. Have a public referendum to end the homestead “rebate” borrowing scheme

4. Eliminate Council on Affordable Housing (COAH) tax

5. Eliminate the NJ State corporate income tax
